The right email marketing platform for your Shopify store depends on where you are in your business. Here’s how the main options compare and how to think about the choice.

Klaviyo

Klaviyo is the default recommendation for Shopify stores at most stages of growth. The depth of Shopify data integration is the main reason: Klaviyo pulls order history, product browse data, predicted lifetime value, and custom properties from Shopify, which means your segmentation and flows can be genuinely sophisticated.

The pre-built flows — welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back — are solid starting points that most stores should have live before they invest in acquisition. Klaviyo’s pricing scales with your contact list size, which makes it manageable for growing stores and expensive for large ones with low engagement. Regularly pruning unengaged contacts keeps costs under control.

Klaviyo added SMS as a native channel, which means you can manage both email and SMS flows from the same platform — useful for keeping customer journeys coherent across channels.

Shopify Email

Shopify Email is built into the admin and free up to 10,000 sends per month. It covers the basics: campaigns, some automation, and reasonable Shopify data integration. It lacks Klaviyo’s segmentation depth, predictive analytics, and flow complexity. For stores that are just starting out and not yet ready to invest in Klaviyo, it’s a reasonable starting point. Most stores outgrow it once they’re running active marketing programs.

Omnisend

Omnisend is a solid middle-ground option. Better automation and segmentation than Shopify Email, lower cost than Klaviyo at comparable contact counts, and native support for email, SMS, and push notifications from one platform. It integrates well with Shopify. Worth considering for brands that want more than the basics but aren’t at a scale where Klaviyo’s advanced features justify the cost difference.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp’s Shopify integration has improved, but it still lacks the native data depth of Klaviyo or even Omnisend. The main reason it comes up: many businesses already have Mailchimp accounts. If you’re starting fresh or evaluating platforms seriously, Klaviyo or Omnisend will serve Shopify stores better. Mailchimp is a reasonable choice if your marketing needs are primarily newsletter-driven rather than ecommerce-specific.

How to Choose

If you’re a new store or early-stage: start with Shopify Email. It’s free and covers the basics while you’re establishing your business. Move to Klaviyo when you have enough customer data that segmentation starts to matter — typically once you’re seeing consistent repeat customers.

If you’re a growing store: Klaviyo is almost certainly the right answer. The setup investment is real but the automated flow revenue typically justifies it within the first few months.

If you’re cost-conscious: Omnisend is a credible alternative to Klaviyo at lower price points, particularly if you want SMS alongside email.

The platforms not worth evaluating for Shopify: most general-purpose email platforms that treat ecommerce data as an afterthought rather than the foundation.
