Klaviyo is a data-driven email and SMS marketing platform built specifically for ecommerce. It pulls customer, order, and behavioral data out of your store and uses it to send automated flows (welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase) and segmented broadcast campaigns. For Shopify brands, it's the most widely used email platform in the DTC market — and for most stores doing more than $50K/month in revenue, it's the default choice.

This guide covers what Klaviyo does, how it works, what it costs, and how to evaluate whether it's the right platform for your brand.

What Klaviyo Does

At its core, Klaviyo is a customer database wired into an email and SMS sending engine. The database pulls in everything your store knows about each customer: what they've bought, when they bought it, what pages they've viewed, what's in their cart right now, how much they've spent over their lifetime, whether they're subscribed to email or SMS, and dozens of other data points. That data then drives two things:

Automated flows. Sequences that trigger based on customer behavior and run continuously without manual intervention. The core flows most Shopify brands build are: welcome series for new subscribers, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back for lapsed customers, and replenishment reminders for consumable products. Once set up correctly, these run 24/7 and typically generate 30-50% of total email revenue.

Segmented broadcast campaigns. One-time sends (new product launches, promotions, seasonal campaigns, newsletters) targeted to specific customer segments rather than the entire list. Klaviyo's segmentation is the feature that really differentiates it from basic email tools — you can build segments like "bought Product A but not Product B in the last 90 days," "spent over $500 lifetime," or "viewed the new collection twice but didn't add to cart."

How Klaviyo Works with Shopify

Klaviyo's Shopify integration is the deepest in the market — it's what made Klaviyo the default DTC email platform over the last several years. The integration syncs automatically and includes:

  • Customer and order sync: Every order, customer, product, and event from Shopify flows into Klaviyo in real time. No import scripts, no manual uploads.
  • Product catalog sync: Klaviyo mirrors your Shopify product catalog, so you can insert live product cards into emails with accurate pricing, images, and inventory status.
  • On-site tracking: A tracking snippet captures page views, product views, adds to cart, searches, and checkout behavior — data that feeds both automated flows and segmentation.
  • Revenue attribution: Klaviyo tracks revenue back to specific emails and flows, so you can see which campaigns and automations are actually driving sales.

Setup is a Shopify app install plus a tracking snippet. Most stores are fully connected in under an hour.

Klaviyo Pricing

Klaviyo pricing is based on the number of active profiles (email subscribers) in your account, with separate SMS pricing based on message volume.

Free tier: Up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends per month. Enough for the first weeks of a new store but not practical past that.

Email paid plans start at $20/month for 500 profiles and scale up. Common pricing tiers:

  • 1,500 profiles: ~$45/month
  • 5,000 profiles: ~$100/month
  • 10,000 profiles: ~$175/month
  • 25,000 profiles: ~$400/month
  • 50,000 profiles: ~$720/month

Pricing scales continuously — the tiers above are approximate price points. Klaviyo's pricing calculator on their website gives the exact number for your list size.

SMS is priced separately based on message volume and country. US SMS runs roughly $0.01 per send (slightly more for MMS). Email + SMS bundled plans are available.

Klaviyo Features Worth Knowing

Segmentation and dynamic segments. Build customer segments based on any combination of properties, behaviors, and predicted metrics. Segments update automatically as customer data changes.

Predictive analytics. Klaviyo predicts lifetime customer value (CLV), next expected order date, and churn risk for every customer. These predictions feed into segmentation ("target customers with CLV over $200 who are predicted to churn in the next 30 days") and flow triggers.

A/B testing. Test subject lines, send times, content, and flow variations. Klaviyo automatically picks the winner after a sample size you define.

Sign-up forms. Build email capture forms (popups, embedded, flyouts) and connect them to flows. Klaviyo's forms are simpler than dedicated tools like Justuno but sufficient for most stores.

Reviews. Klaviyo Reviews is a native product reviews feature that collects and displays customer reviews, competing with dedicated tools like Okendo, Yotpo, and Judge.me.

Klaviyo AI. AI-generated subject lines, email copy suggestions, and send-time optimization. Useful for speeding up campaign creation but not a substitute for strategy.

Klaviyo vs. Other Email Platforms

Klaviyo vs. Mailchimp: Mailchimp is the better choice for small businesses outside ecommerce — newsletters, B2B, services. For ecommerce, Klaviyo's product catalog sync, segmentation depth, and revenue attribution make it substantially more capable.

Klaviyo vs. Omnisend: Omnisend is a direct ecommerce competitor at a lower price point, often a reasonable choice for smaller stores. Klaviyo has more advanced segmentation and predictive analytics; Omnisend is easier to use and cheaper. Most brands that outgrow Omnisend move to Klaviyo.

Klaviyo vs. Attentive: Attentive is an SMS-first platform with strong enterprise features. For brands whose SMS volume dwarfs their email volume, Attentive can make sense. For most brands, Klaviyo's combined email + SMS is simpler and lower-cost.

Klaviyo vs. Shopify Email: Shopify Email is Shopify's built-in email tool, included with every Shopify plan. It's fine for occasional broadcasts but doesn't have flows, segmentation, or meaningful automation. Most growing stores outgrow it quickly.

When Klaviyo Makes Sense

Klaviyo is the right choice for most Shopify brands doing $50K+/month in revenue. Below that threshold, lower-cost tools like Omnisend or Shopify Email can be sufficient while you're still building your list. Above that threshold, the revenue Klaviyo generates through flows and segmented campaigns consistently outweighs the platform cost — typically 2-5x return on monthly subscription fees for a well-built program.

The question isn't usually whether Klaviyo is worth using. It's whether the program is built correctly. A Klaviyo account with unused flows, uncoordinated broadcast cadence, and untargeted segmentation will underperform the platform's potential by a large margin.
