Retention & Experience

Shopify Subscriptions

Subscription businesses are the bee's knees. Higher customer lifetime value? Check. Ability to compete with a higher CAC? You bet. Less seasonal mood swings in your revenue? Absolutely. It's no wonder everyone and their dog wants to jump on the subscription bandwagon.

But here's the thing–we've been in the subscription rodeo for over a decade, specifically in the CPG space. We know these beasts inside and out, including where all the skeletons like to hide. We've seen how they tango with acquisition strategies and we've got a sixth sense for sniffing out risks. Not to brag, but we're pretty darn good at this.

Over the years, we've:

  • Wrestled with several large-scale subscription migrations (trust us, they're way more of a headache than your average e-commerce move)
  • Navigated changes to legacy products like a pro
  • Helped our clients build seven-figure empires on the back of subscription products

As Recharge partners, we've got the chops and the smarts to support your business, ask the questions that'll make you go "huh, never thought of that," and cook up solutions that'll make your competitors wonder what you're putting in your coffee.

We've got specific experience in:

  • Integrating Recharge with Klaviyo and Rebuy (fancy words for making your tech stack play nice together)
  • Supporting segmentation, upselling to subscription, and keeping churn at bay
  • Crunching the numbers and giving you the lowdown on your subscription performance

Look, we're not ones to toot our own horn (okay, maybe a little toot), but when it comes to supporting e-commerce businesses in the subscription space, we're versatile, reliable, and always ready to tackle whatever challenge you throw our way.

What building Shopify subscriptions actually involves

The work splits into three pieces that have to line up. First, the offer: what a first-time buyer sees, how hard you push subscribe-and-save, and whether the incentive is generous enough to convert without quietly eating your margin. Second, the tech: Recharge configured properly and wired into Klaviyo so the emails fire on the real billing events — upcoming charge, failed payment, skip, swap. Third, the plumbing you hope customers never notice, like dunning on declined cards.

Then there's churn, which is where subscription programs are won or lost. We build cancel-prevention flows that offer a skip, a pause, or a lower frequency before someone hits cancel, and we watch churn by cohort and product so you can see where subscribers are actually leaking. It's ongoing work, and it connects directly to the rest of your retention program.

Why build Shopify subscriptions with First Pier

We work day to day in Recharge and have spent years in the CPG subscription trenches, including the migrations most agencies would rather not touch — the ones where active subscribers, billing dates, and next-order timing all have to move without a single failed charge. We'll tell you honestly whether subscriptions fit your category before you commit to the tech.

We went from essentially $0 in sales to multimillion-dollar sales very rapidly. The direct-to-consumer business is the fastest-growing segment of our business right now, and we wouldn't have been able to achieve any of that without First Pier.
